Insurance for you gear

Your kit is covered hiring through MyKitPlace.

We self-insure items up to a value of £500 for loss or damage. This is calculationed based on the replacement value of the kit. Items over this amount, we work with the hirer to ensure that put in place a hired-in equipment policy.  We will notify you when this has happened and then you can confirm the hire.

We offer the following guidance to kit hirers: http://support.mykitplace.co.uk/knowledge-base/insurance/

We realise there are two main areas of concern:

A: Actual Fraud/Theft where the hirer disappears with the kit.

B: Accidental loss or damage

In terms of both:

When a booking request comes through, the owner can look at the hirer’s profile to see what level they have been verified by MyKitPlace. They will only be able make a booking if they have at least the required level of verification.

Owners should always review a potential hirer’s profile to see:

  1. Are they “Verified by MyKitPlace”. This means we checked their IDs and proof of address and whether they have a track record in filmmaking. So they are who they say they are. (Owners still need to see these at the point of equipment handover though).
  2. How long they’ve been a member
  3. Have they hired before and what reviews did they get.

Then based on this information an owner can make an informed decision.

You may be happy to conduct low-level hires for DSRLs and accessories with newer or younger members, but would you trust someone with little prior experience with an Alexa or Dragon? Probably not.

But everyone is going to have their own level of risk. For a young owner who has one DSLR they saved for months to buy, they will probably be more cautious than someone with several spare cameras they aren’t using anymore.

Making a Claim

In the unfortunate event that your kit is damaged, lost or stolen you must report it within 48 hours to info@mykitplace.com.

If your claim is under the £500 threshold you will deal directly with MyKitPlace. Contact us at info@mykitplace.com

If the claim is likely to be more than £500, you will need to make a claim directly with the renter’s insurance company and MyKitPlace will help to facilitate that. We will also hope to get the owner back in business within 48 hours by lending a replacement item while the dispute is resolved.
